Review: The Unicorn (Las Vegas Film Festival)

Title: The Unicorn
MPAA Rating: Not Rated
Director: Robert Schwartzman
Starring: Lauren LapkusNicholas RutherfordLucy Hale
Runtime: 1 hr 28 mins

What It Is: When Malory (Lapkus) and Caleb (Rutherford) set out to have a very fun time on a weekend away for her parent’s vow renewals. As they explore the world of a threesome while trying to find a woman to have one with, known as a “unicorn”. As they stumble and bumble their way through a very…weird night, to say the least, their relationship will grow stronger as they try to really further understand one and other.

What We Think: Schwartzman isn’t the strongest director behind the lens but armed with a pretty good script and some great performances he’s able to gather enough evidence on film here to be guilty of making a pretty good movie. This is a very talented cast and one that will have you laughing throughout. I said in my review of Dude that I’d never really seen Lucy Hale in anything. Since then I saw her show Life Sentence, which was terrible however she’s in this and she’s really good! Couple that with cameos from SNL alums Kyle Mooney and Beck Bennett and you have a few more laughs to be had.

Our Grade: B+, This is one I can certainly give my stamp of approval too. I’d recommend you check out our interview with Nick Rutherford who plays Caleb. He’s a very funny guy indeed. Likewise, it seems like director Schwartzman, also the lead vocalist for rock band Rooney really is getting a grasp of this whole director thing. Check this one out when it does release as I find that audiences will really enjoy this. It’s funny, poignant and most importantly interesting. If you’re in the mood for a good laugh…or even a chuckle check this one out for sure
