Title: Someone Great
MPAA Rating: R
Director: Jennifer Kaytin Robinson
Starring: Gina Rodriguez, Brittany Snow, DeWanda Wise
Runtime: 1 hr 32 mins

What It Is: Jenny (Rodriguez) just got her dream job. With that, she’ll be moving to San Francisco leaving behind her two best friends Blair (Snow) and Erin (Wise). When her long-time boyfriend Nate (LaKeith Stanfield) breaks it off with her she’s…sort of a wreck. Now it’s up to her girls and a well-timed music festival to try and bring her back up to the bad bitch she knows she is. Will it work though, that’s the question.

What We Think: There are moments in this film that just totally work. For example, I think the three female leads have naturalistic chemistry and come off as friends. This really helps the film as a whole. I found it fairly enjoyable, insofar as Netflix RomCom’s go. Namely because this isn’t really a RomCom. It’s an exploration of female friendship and how cathartic and necessary those connections are. Gina Rodriguez is so good in this that you find yourself rooting for her right off the jump. I mean tell me after the dance along to Lizzo that you don’t leave that scene wanting to be her friend…and I don’t even like Lizzo.

Our Grade: C+, Above average for Netflix fare. This one will totally be a crowd-pleaser. I expect most people who have very simple tastes to enjoy this immensely. It’s easy to get behind and it’s execution easy enough. It’s not a complex drama but one that tells a tale that some may relate to. I’ll give it a mild recommendation with the aforementioned caveats. Nonetheless, Gina Rodriguez… the love of my life…should do more movies. Except for Miss Bala no more of that trash, please, my heart can’t take it. Netflix is really out here trying people. They are.
