Title: Over the Moon
MPAA Rating: PG
Director: Glen Keane, John Kahrs
Starring: Ruthie Ann Miles, John Cho, Cathy Ang
Runtime: 1 hr 35 mins

What It Is: Fei Fei (Ang) is a young woman who has lost her beloved mother. Now all that’s left of her is the pet bunny she was given, the memories of her, and the stories. Oh, the stories and legends from ancient Chinese lore. The one that’s always stuck with her is the legend of Chang’e (Phillipa Soo) who lives on the moon after escaping there. After her adoring father (Cho) meets a new woman, Mrs. Zhong (Sandra Oh), and her son Chin.  Fei Fei herself will try to escape to the moon herself.

What We Think: This film is so damn gorgeous. This is the second animated film THIS YEAR with a unique animation style. While this is more of a photorealistic approach the also wonderful The Willoughbys uses a clear cartoon feel. Every part of this experience is absolutely beautiful. From the visuals to the story and vocal performances, all of it coalesces wonderfully to craft a film we’re going to be hearing more about come Oscar time. Not only is there so much culture encapsulated but it is all put together so interestingly and lovingly.

Our Grade: A-, Netflix has been hitting it out of the park with the animation lately. As I mentioned previously there are so many gorgeous visuals here and I cannot understand the decisions that went into this. How do you look at this script and say I want almost photo-realistic looking character models…and weird silly goop creatures. Definitely one to check out and with it being on Netflix it’s easy to get to. I want more from this studio, from these filmmakers and can’t wait to see what comes next.
