Title: The Craft: Legacy
MPAA Rating: PG-13
Director: Zoe Lister-Jones
Starring: Cailee Spaeny, Zoey Luna, Gideon Adlon
Runtime: 1 hr 37 mins

What It Is: When a young girl is plopped into the middle of an existing family by her mother, this young lady, Lily (Spaeny) is sort of an outsider. When she meets three strange girls in school it’s official. She’s the missing piece of their covenant. The 4th they’ve been looking for. Now the quadrant is busy doing bad-girl shit, quite literally. Changing and shaping the world around them. But when they discover the true depths of their power it is only after some tragedy strikes.

What We Think: The original is an absolute 90’s cult classic. What Blumhouse did with this is update it for a more…modern audience. What they produce is on par with how the original was treated when it first came out. Perhaps, the film seemingly belies the very nature of its source. While the previous incarnation is by no means a traditionally…good…film it has its niche audience and that’s exactly what I think will become of this. Cailee Spaeny is really good here. Zoe Lister-Jones is back in the chair here and this is much different than her last shot at it. I called her film Band Aid and honorable mention for my best films of the year in 2017. She seems to understand the ultra-feminist “girl power” that the original harnesses. She gathers those influences as best as she can. Where a film like this could fail, and this does not, is how Lily and her crew come together as a group. Thankfully that whole piece of business works…even if other plot points do not. Anything involving David Duchovny and that whole subplot is a plodding bore and a complete mess. When it’s just the four girls doing witchy things it’s actually a whole lot of fun.

Our Grade: C+, This is a really big surprise insofar as the quality put into it. Zoe Lister-Jones is a good director and whatever she does next will no doubt be interesting. That’s proving to be a theme of her work. Callie Spaeny is picking cool projects and has the look of a star in the making. I was surprised by this and I think you will be too. Check it out it’s on-demand and available on VOD right now!
