Title: What’s Love Got to Do with It?
MPA Rating: PG-13
Director: Shekhar Kapur
Starring: Lily James, Shazad Latif, Emma Thompson
Runtime: 1 hr 48 mins

What It Is: Documentarian Zoe (James) has been tasked by her best friend Kazim (Latif) with helping him through his assisted marriage journey. You see Kazim, a doctor is getting on in age and feels it’s time to settle down with a nice Indian girl. Zoe decides if she’s going to help that she’s at the very least going to document this journey. Even if she may or may not like whatever it is she’s seeing.

What We Think: This is such an expertly crafted romantic comedy. Seeing someone other than the traditional “white male” lead fall in love here was nice and it was even nicer that it was a mixed relationship. Lily James is quite charming and Shazad Latif is brilliant and believable. Their chemistry was also pretty good and that adds to it. Its ending is fantastic and if not for some serious stumbles midway through this could’ve ranked even higher with me. As it stands it’s still a very well made, well acted and crisply directed little romantic comedy. One that fans of the genre are sure to digest and redigest on subsequent watches.

Our Grade: B, Having rewatchability is super important for a film like this. It’s what makes not so great films like Ghosts of Girlfriends Past and 13 Going on 30 better than the sticker price. I DEFINITELY think people should check this out as it is on VOD as we speak. Rarely if ever has Lily James impressed me but here she’s just too damn charming. Emma Thompson is great in her role as Zoe’s rather…eccentric…mother Cath. One to watch if you’re feeling light and want something that’ll keep you in a positive mindset.
