Title: The Boss
MPAA Rating: R
Director: Ben Falcone
Starring: Melissa McCarthy, Kristen Bell, Peter Dinklage
Runtime: 1 hr 39 mins

What It Is: Michelle Darnell (McCarthy) is a self-made woman. A savant, a woman whose drive is unmatched. When that drive leads her to take some stock tips that results in her going to prison for insider trading. Someone, however, snitched on Michelle and it was none other than her former lover and fellow financial magnet Renault (Dinklage). Now she has to rely on the kindness of her ex-assistant Claire (Bell) who is just way too nice to this terrible, terrible person.

What We Think: This a very bad movie. Melissa McCarthy just continues to not be very interesting. It’s more of the same. She falls down. She makes bad jokes and a lot of the “script” here just does not work. Kristen Bell is not fun nor endearing in the least, though not through lack of trying. I don’t know what Ben Falcone is doing. Like is he directing this film? What is this? He isn’t making something funny. There’s no real plot outside of a vague Girl’s Scout clone trying to fill the void that is Michelle’s life. Dinklage is phoning it in. Of this, I am assured.

Our Grade: D, Do not see this movie. It is not funny nor is it worth any amount of money you’re going to spend. I don’t think Ben Falcone is a particularly good director and I’m absolutely done with Melissa McCarthy. Ghostbusters is coming out and I’m not really interested. She ruined the trailer and outside of maybe Bridesmaids there is nothing too great to speak of here. This and the even more awful Tammy are his only two directing credits, perhaps he should try directing something he did not write. Perhaps not directing at all.
