Title: Tell Me Everything
MPAA Rating: Not Rated
Director: Moshe Rosenthal
Starring: Assi Cohen, Mor Dimri, Yair Mazor
Runtime: 1 hr 49 min

What It Is: At the height of the AIDS epidemic, a boy finds out his father is gay and makes it his personal mission to kick his father out of his life. Years later, he seeks to reconnect for money.

What We Think: Ugh, the more I think about this movie, the less I like it. I mean, Jesus, we follow a fucking homophobe the entire movie. I understand seeing your father cheat is traumatizing for anyone. A little Ripley lore, I’ve kicked my own dad out of my life for that. But the blatant homophobia of the kid and his family was really vile to me. It didn’t sit well with me and the movie almost seemed to be taking the side of homophobia at times, which made the messaging of the movie very confusing. Is it homophobic? Is it trying to show us the evils of homophobia? I honestly didn’t know. I just know there’s a scene where the kid gets his ass kicked by a gay man and I didn’t think he got his ass kicked enough.

I felt so bad for the dad in this. Yes, he shouldn’t have done things behind his family’s back like that, but he very clearly did love his family. And the son does get a little redemption at the end, but it was definitely not enough. The acting and cinematography was good, but this film framed everything like a coming of age film. Coming of age film about a homophobe coming to grips that maybe he shouldn’t be a homophobe? I don’t know, man. Rough sell for me. I would’ve preferred if the dad was the main character. Would have made a much more interesting film.

Our Grade: D, Look, It’d be lower if the acting and cinematography weren’t there. This film struck a wrong chord with me and was definitely my absolute least favorite of the festival.

Also, also, there was a weird dynamic with the son and his mother? Like, at times, it almost seemed like the mother was into her own son and there was an Oedipal thing going on? Did not enjoy that aspect, whether it was intentional or not.
