Title: Gone Girl
MPAA Rating: R
Director: David Fincher
Starring: Ben Affleck, Rosamund Pike, Tyler Perry
Runtime: 2 hrs 25 mins

What It Is: Nick Dunne’s (Affleck) wife is gone! She’s dissappeared without a trace. Perhaps she dead, perhaps she’s just been kidnapped who knows. But his relationship with her is not what it appears to be, and suddenly he’s the premier suspect on her dissapperance. Where could she be? Who could have done this? He along with his twin sister Margot (played well by newcomer Carrie Coon) and high price lawyer Tanner Bolt (Perry) will try to absolve him of all wrongdoing, but even they aren’t sure if he killed her or not. What happeneds to Amy Dunne (Pike), only she knows and right now she’s gone.

What We Think: Rosamund Pike made this script her bitch, and she acts the heck out of it. She’ll be in Oscar contention for sure, but I’d like to point a light on Affleck subtle performance which carries this film. Likewise Carrie Coon shines as Margot Dunne, Nick’s twin sister. Sure Pike is incredible and Affleck great, but there’s plenty of supporting actors here who are good. Patrick Fugit, Neil Patrick Harris, Missy Pyle and the ilk just kill it in each of there roles. There is a gravitas with which Fincher directs this. As if he’s saying go right ahead and try to figure out the next move, and in entirely Finchereseque fashion we really can’t guess whats next. It’s filming is done much in the way Fincher like as well low lit, and with many different greys and pale blues, there’s always this sanitized look about his recent films like they were meant for a hospital room.

Our Grade: A,While it is far from perfect this is as close to a mass appeal film Fincher is probably ever likely to get. Having said it’s also absolutely a dark, atmospheric thriller, which is Fincher’s calling card. This is definitely one of the years best, and being as profitable as it was ($164.4 million on a $61 million budget) it should see an Oscar nomination for Best Picture.
