Title: Accidental Love
MPAA Rating: PG-13
Director: David O. Russell
Starring: Jake Gyllenhaal, Jessica Biel, James Marsden
Runtime: 1 hr 40 mins

What It Is: Alice (Biel) is a young, beautiful waitress with a lot going for her when we meet her. She has a cool job she really likes at a 50’s style diner, a handsome policeman boyfriend (Marsden) and parents that still love her and each other. One night when out with her boyfriend she is shot in the head with a nail gun lodging a nail into her brain in a potentially perilous position. Being without health care Alice goes to politician Howard Birdwell (Gyllenhaal) for help in passing legislation to get health care for people with weird illnesses.

What We Think: What the hell is this film? It feels almost like a series of films smashed together incoherently in an attempt to finish this film that I don’t think had a finished concept, nor an end in sight. This piece really wants to take after another David O. Russell picture I Heart Huckabees, but fails to cover that films quirk and charm. Look no further then the poster (of which I’ve used a snipper as an example) I mean it clearly plagiarizes the poster for an earlier Russell piece I Heart Huckabees. Just look up the two posters or check our Twitter in the coming days when we post a comparison between the two. Lastly can you even plagiarize yourself?

Our Grade: D-, This film has the dubious distinction of being so bad that Russell is never “officially” credited as having directed this catastrophe…except he did. It’s also quite possibly the worst film Gyllenhaal has ever been in. He usually has a great track record, but one thing to keep in mind is that this film originally entitled Nailed has been in development hell for years. We can see why.
