Title: It Follows
MPAA Rating: R
Director: David Robert Mitchell
Starring: Maika Monroe, Keir Gilchrist, Olivia Luccardi
Runtime: 1 hr 40 mins

What It Is: When a young woman named Jay ( Monroe) is being followed by an unknown and unseen entity following intercourse with a man. Now the entity is following her and it can appear as anyone, at anytime. Should it touch Jay she will be killed by it. Her only manner of getting rid of it is to give it to someone else. Of course the only way to do that is to spread this STD (Sexually Transmitted Demon) through well…sex.

What We Think: This film goes places most other small budget films won’t. Yet there is also a restraint that needed in modern horror, and yet unseen.Star Monroe continues to impress me, much in the way she did in last year’s The Guest. At the same time the scores of the two films are very similar both feature synth heavy, accelerated time signatures and female vocalization. Director Mitchell may just have a bright future ahead of him thanks to his incredibly good work here. He made a primarily invisible protagonist a truly viable one.

Our Grade: B+, I based this much in the way I do most horror films. In that I want something that has characters that I care about. Specifically whether they live or die. How many moments of terror or uncomfortable tension did I feel? Once I can answer these question I will feel better about grading it out. It Follows did enough to make the grade just not enough the get an A. I really think Maika Monroe is a future star in the making.
