Title: Tag
MPAA Rating: R
Director: Jeff Tomsic
Starring: Ed Helms, Jeremy Renner, Jon Hamm
Runtime: 1 hr 40 mins

What It Is: A group of adult friends has been playing the same game of tag for over 30 years. When their friend Jerry (Renner) who’s never been tagged in those 30 years is getting married they’re bound and determined to tag him at all costs. When it looks like Hogan (Helms) has a plan they set off to finally get that tag. Whatever it takes. But will that aspiration ruin a huge milestone in Jerry’s life? Will they ACTUALLY reach their goal?

What We Think: At times this film is funny. I caution that I DID say AT TIMES because sometimes it tries to be funny and it completely misses. I’ve never found Ed Helms very funny. That streak continues here. In fact, his movie wife Isla Fisher steals scenes from him left, right and center. Renner is good as the smug Jerry and Jon Hamm steps out of his comfort zone. Overall the whole thing is let down by Tomsic’s direction and the blase script with too many cliches and even more flat jokes. Overall this one feels like an opportunity lost.

Our Grade: D+, I can’t really recommend this one to people outside of those who just really like one particular cast member. Looking outside of that there’s nothing here. Who keeps giving Ed Helms work? Dude wasn’t even really funny in The Office and like everyone is funny on that show! So yeah, go right on ahead and tag yourself out because this film certainly does not have IT. Unless the it you’re looking for is bad jokes, bad action, and kinda stupid dialogue. If that’s what you want then yes this film has it, and it has that in SPADES. Skip it!
