Title: Women is Losers
MPAA Rating: Not Yet Rated
Director: Lissette Feliciano
Starring: Lorenza Izzo, Bryan Craig, Simu Liu
Runtime: 1 hr 24 mins

What It Is: Celina (Izzo) is a driven young woman who had a baby when she was super young. This has not deterred her from reaching her goals which include buying her own home someday. These goals are complicated because her ex-boyfriend Mateo (Craig) is kind of an asshole. He stunts her growth as a person at every turn. Likewise her father might be even worse in stunting her as he’s a misogynistic piece of garbage.

What We Think: The film has a great plot…in theory. Based on a real persons life there’s something to be said for keeping the story concise. At only 84 mins this is very much that. Lorenza Izzo was definitely the woman for the job here. She gives a performance that is much better then the overall film. I think the overall issue is the writing. Lissette Feliciano knew what she wanted to write but not exactly how to put it together on the page. She directs her script pretty well and is helped by some interesting and intriguing ideas she decided to roll with.

Our Grade: C-, It’s the type of film that swings for the fences. It leads mostly to a flyout at the warning track but nonetheless it swung. It’s a commendable effort but not up to the snuff from the SXSW crop this year. Either way it’s a tale I’m glad got told. Even if I didn’t appreciate the telling of the tale. This is something I’m going to say you can see if you’re REALLY interested in the content or the story. However, if you want a good film…maybe look elsewhere. This is isn’t good ENOUGH. Valiant effort to be sure.
