Title: Last Breath

What It Is: Deep sea diving is one of the world’s most dangerous professions. What starts as a routine dive quickly takes a turn for the worse. When Chris (Cole), one of their own, becomes trapped hundreds of feet below the surface, it’s up to Dave (Liu) and the seasoned veteran Duncan (Harrelson) to do everything they can to bring him home.

They must race against time, the immense power of the ocean, and gravity itself.

This is based on a true story.

What We Think: The film struggles to build tension—at least for me. I’m not even sure why; I just wasn’t feeling it… but I wasn’t. As it went on, I found myself gradually losing interest.

The performances aren’t particularly memorable, and really, there are only three that stand out at all. Unfortunately, this ends up being a bit of a nothing-burger of a film—it just doesn’t leave much of an impression.

That said, it does look good, and it’s not necessarily a bad way to kill 90 minutes. And that’s actually one of its biggest positives: it’s only 93 minutes long.

Woody Harrelson and Simu Liu are both great, even if the material they’re working with is underwhelming.

Our Grade: C, Listen—there’s nothing inherently wrong with this film. With a bit more attention to detail on the narrative level, it could have been a solid little entry for Focus Features.

As it stands, this is simply a mild misstep for a juggernaut of independent distribution. You can’t win them all, and sadly, there’s no real victory to be found here.

This real-life story deserved something just a bit more compelling to truly bring it to life.
