Title: Sharp Corner
MPA Rating: Not Rated
Director: Jason Buxton
Starring: Ben Foster, Cobie Smulders, Alexandra Castillo
Runtime: 1 hr 50 mins

What It Is: Josh (Foster) and his wife Rachel (Smulders) have just moved into the home of their dreams—or so they think. On their very first day, they witness something deeply unsettling: a car misses the sharp turn near their house, crashes into a tree, and kills the driver, with a tire hurtling through their living room window. Shaken, Josh becomes obsessed with preventing further deaths, while Rachel believes it’s best to cut their losses.

What We Think: Ben Foster is always worth the price of admission. He carries this film from start to finish, delivering a performance full of nuance. Cobie Smulders is no slouch either, though I do think the script betrays her character—it doesn’t build around her enough.

Jason Buxton, in his second feature, has clearly evolved as a filmmaker since his debut, the Canadian feature Blackbird. As a writer, however, there’s still room for growth. Some of the plot points—and the way they’re structured within the narrative—don’t work nearly as well as they should. That, perhaps, is the film’s biggest overall problem.

Our Grade: C, A perfectly fine indie flick, anchored by a phenomenal lead performance. It’s a thrilling look at what obsession can become when it truly takes over. I love how that particular thread of the narrative is handled, even if some other parts could’ve been tightened up beforehand.

The film is ultimately saved by the performances of its leads. Check it out if you’re in the mood for a decent thriller that could’ve used one more pass on the script. Otherwise, it’s a solid film that deserves as many eyeballs as it can get.
