Title: My Mother’s Wedding
MPA Title: R
Director: Kristin Scott Thomas
Starring: Scarlett Johansson, Sienna Miller, Emily Beecham
Runtime: 1hr 35 mins
What It Is: Katherine (Johansson), Victoria (Miller), and Georgina (Beecham) are three sisters whose mother, Diana (Kristin Scott Thomas), is getting remarried. With that comes a wedding — but as three adults with complicated lives, finding the time to all be together is difficult. Katherine is a decorated naval officer, Victoria is a famous actress, and Georgina is a busy, married mother. All of these elements collide over a wedding weekend that’s supposed to be special, but of course, the specters of the family’s past are rearing their ugly heads.
What We Think: This is Kristin Scott Thomas’s first time behind the lens, and honestly, it’s hard to see how this works as a sustained project. Her script (co-written with John Micklethwait) just isn’t very interesting. It establishes its premise and tosses in little animated bits that never really pay off. I don’t even fully understand what they were going for with those moments. Scott Thomas isn’t a terrible director — she’s just working from her own uninspired writing. I wish there were more positives to pull from; everyone is giving it their all. There’s a fun film somewhere in here, but nothing to write home about and nothing that truly stands out.
Our Grade: D+, This film is fine, but there’s really nothing here beyond an extraordinarily average story. The writing sinks it, sadly. An impressive cast is largely wasted. Not an immediate recommend by any stretch of the imagination. I had too many problems with the dialogue to ever fully care. Kudos to ScarJo for trying a British accent — it wasn’t bad, and she held her own against some strong British actresses — but this is, unfortunately, a skip.
