Title: The Threesome
MPA Rating: R
Director: Chad Hartigan
Starring: Zoey Deutch, Ruby Cruz, Jonah Hauer-King
Runtime: 1 hr 52 mins

What It Is: Connor (Hauer-King) is completely smitten with Olivia (Deutch), but Olivia isn’t totally feeling it, at least that’s what she makes him believe. When he finally does book a date with her, it’s because the two of them take Jenny (Cruz) home together for a little bit of the titular get-together. The consequences of this are two girls becoming pregnant by Connor. He’s super into Olivia but also doesn’t want to let Jenny down. He’s really not in a great situation.

What We Think: Aside from yet another excellent performance by Zoey Deutch, which seems to just be her default, Ruby Cruz is going to be a star; she’s excellent here. Jonah Hauer-King is endlessly likable as the aloof Connor. Chad Hartigan’s previous flick, the incredibly good Little Fish, featured an excellently portrayed relationship between two highly likable people. The entire throuple dynamic being well done is what makes this movie work. It’s the trials and tribulations they go through that build the drama. Hartigan, for his part, is doing a very nice job directing this. Ethan Ogilby’s script, though, carries the heavy load. Without the delightful dialogue, this would be missing something—but it’s there, and it’s light, and it’s funny. So well written.

Our Grade: B-. This will inevitably be a comedy that gets lost in the shuffle of a very busy year for cinema. I hope that’s not the case, but only time will tell. What the film is, though, is a smart and funny exploration of alternative lifestyles, whether on purpose or not. Now that it is on VOD, this is a very fun and funny experience. It’s to the point with Deutch that if she’s in something, I assume—regardless of the overall film’s quality—that she’s going to kill it. See this one!
