Title: Splitsville
MPA Rating: R
Director: Michael Angelo Covino
Starring: Dakota Johnson, Kyle Marvin, Michael Angelo Covino
Runtime: 1 hr 44 mins

What It Is: Carey (Marvin) has just dumped by his long time girlfriend Ashley (Adria Arjona), who he just proposed to. This leads to him jumping out of their moving car and walking to his best friend Paul’s (Covino) nearby home that he shares with his wife Julie (Johnson). Paul and Julie after a drunken night explain that they are ENM (Ethically Non-managomous). After even further drinks Carey and Julie hook up. This sets off a series of incidences and situations that’ll forever change the futures of all four of these now entangled people.

What We Think: This is just a really funny movie. It flows through all of the methods of comedy. Sight gags, slapstick, even a bit of dramatic irony at times. Dakota Johnson is great here and it’s a great duo with her performance in The Materialists which I also enjoyed. Hate it all you want. This most closely resembles another Johnson performance for me though. Hers in Cha Cha Real Smooth this film feels closer to that. Kyle Marvin is giving it his all and for that we reap the rewards. Michael Angelo Covino seems to be ascending as a film maker and as an actor here he is just as equally good.

Our Grade: B+, A lot of people love to hate Dakota Johnson as an actress but in all honesty I think she continues to be really solid. This is the type of comedy that I firmly believe will get lost in the shuffle of so many others. It isn’t really bombastic in nature and it’s subtleties lay in the relationships we build with the characters and the ones they build with each other. I would HIGHLY recommend everyone check it out. It is truly a ball.
