Title: The Long Walk
MPA Rating: R
Director: Francis Lawrence
Starring: Cooper Hoffman, David Jonsson, Tut Nyuot
Runtime: 1 hr 48 mins

What It Is: There is an annual contest known as The Long Walk in which 50 boys, one from each state, must walk or perish. Walk too slow for too long and you die. Stop walking for any period of time and you die. Meanwhile a man known as The Major constantly shouts encouragement and belittlement throughout the event. When two boys meet and immediately become friends, Raymond (Hoffman), a local kid, and Peter (Jonsson), an enigmatic newcomer, help one another navigate this treacherous journey. Only one contestant will survive.

What We Think: Let us begin with Cooper Hoffman, who does his bloodline proud with this performance. His understanding of the character and the nature of his peril is remarkable for an actor his age, although understandable given his pedigree. David Jonsson continues to shine in every project he appears in, and his talent remains a standout quality.

As for the dialogue and script, this is a fantastic adaptation of Stephen King’s work, so credit to J. T. Mollner for the writing. Francis Lawrence has become a reliable filmmaker when it comes to adapting novels or short stories. Out of his ten feature films only one, 2022’s Slumberland (which may also be his weakest film), was not adapted from written material. That is impressive for someone who began his career, as many great directors do, by making music videos.

Our Grade: A, Special thanks to Lionsgate for sending us a Blu-Ray copy of what I consider one of 2025’s best films. Stylish in its darkness, the movie explores King’s themes with considerable skill. Guided by Lawrence’s tight direction, the film keeps every moment framed exactly where it needs to be and paced at the right rhythm. This results in a beautiful and devastating portrait of something that does not feel far removed from the world we live in today.

THE LONG WALK is now available on Digital, Blu-ray™, and DVD!

A 4K UHD combo will also be available on December 23!
