Title: Mimics
MPA Rating: PG-13
Director: Kristoffer Polaha
Starring: Kristoffer Polaha, Moriah, Stephen Tobolowsky
Runtime: 1 hr 30 mins

What It Is: Sam Reinhold (Polaha) is a comedian who specializes in impersonations. He’s pretty okay at it, mostly, not near the level of his now-fallen hero Dom Fletcher (Jason Marsden). When a mysterious envelope arrives from an agency claiming it can change the trajectory of Sam’s career, it’s an offer he cannot refuse. When he accepts their offer, a whirlwind begins to swell around Sam and his career. His coworker at the grocery store, Virginia (Moriah), is super supportive and looks forward to whatever positivity comes his way. Something sinister is brewing, however, and it’ll change Sam’s life forever.

What We Think: I had a fun time with this film for what it is and the budget. Kristoffer Polaha takes the reins fully, writing it, directing it, and starring in it. There’s something about that commitment that gives grace to whatever the outcome is. Here’s where it gets a little rocky: some of the acting is, for lack of a better word, not great. Polaha and Moriah have amazing chemistry, but some of the other characters read as camp instead of fitting into the narrative well. In particular, the scenes involving the agency. They just don’t sit well. It just didn’t work as well as I had hoped.

Our Grade: C+ I had a really fun time with this! That’s the highest compliment you can give something like this. It was fantastic to speak with Kristoffer and Moriah about this film and get such great insight into it. I said it myself in that interview: the film gave me exactly what I wanted. I laughed a little, and that’s mostly what I was hoping to get out of it. Either way, it’s pretty fun. Check it out!
