Title: Hoppers
MPA Rating: PG
Director: Daniel Chong
Starring: Piper Curda, Bobby Moynihan, Jon Hamm
Runtime: 1 hr 44 mins

What It Is: Mabel (Curda) has always been a lover of animals with a bit of an anger problem. When the town’s mayor intends to build a freeway that pushes through a glade of some importance to Mabel, she discovers some scientists at her college have come up with new tech that allows a human to awaken their consciousness into a robot. These robots look exactly like specific animals. In Mabel’s case she is now a beaver. She can now hear the words of these animals and converse with them. Her intention is to save the glade and stop this freeway.

What We Think: What a fun and funny film from Pixar. This felt like a real attempt to make something that’s interesting in concept and excellent in execution. Pixar were not subtle with the messaging here and you know what? They never really have been. Piper Curda brings so much to this as the voice of Mabel. Her frenetic energy is easy to get behind but it does present the problem of Mabel being really annoying. Like, I understand her perspective but there comes a time when your persistence turns into annoyance. Outside of that minor inconvenience, what we have here is a really stellar piece of animation. I was very behind this as it unfolded and it’ll contend come awards season even if audiences forget about it by then.

Our Grade: A-, This is a damn fine time at the movies. Pixar might still have a little magic left in its aging bones. This was the right kind of animated film. One that works wonderfully well for the children and has enough for adults to digest as well. I adored how high quality it all looks but that’s to be expected from the world’s foremost expert on 3D animated films. It’s probably still playing near you and I’d highly recommend you see it on a giant screen whilst you can.
