Title: Pretty Lethal
MPA Rating: R
Director: Vicky Lewson
Starring: Maddie Ziegler, Lana Condor, Millicent Simmonds
Runtime: 1 hr 28 mins
What It Is: A group of high-level ballerinas from the United States are stuck, due to a bus breakdown, in rural Hungary. When they stumble into Osip (Miklós Béres) he invites them to the bar he works out of. A bar that’s very organized crime-coded. Its owner Devora (Uma Thurman) is herself a former ballerina. When everything goes wrong the troupe of ballerinas must fight their way out of a clearly dangerous situation that they are fully not trained nor prepared for. At least not in a formal way. With the leadership of Bones (Ziegler), a ballerina from the “wrong side of the tracks” who knows exactly how to battle for herself. Now she’ll teach her fellow dancers a means of survival, and how to use their athleticism to get out alive.
What We Think: Dumb, stupid, ridiculous and fun. This is the exact sort of vehicle we as society should be using to launch Maddie Ziegler. It utilizes her training as a dancer and her developing acting skill set. Less Music and more of what I saw of her in The Fallout. I had a great time watching this. It’s not very well-written, it isn’t all that interesting to look at but sometimes solid action and fun line delivery can really carry something like this. It is in these regards where this film shines. Some of the situations our dancers are in are super silly but played for dire.
Our Grade: C+, This was a deliciously dumb film. At no point did I feel like what I was watching was great. It’s good enough. For all its flaws it is at the end of the day a rather entertaining and easy to get through film. It’s currently running on Prime Video so give this a look see.
