Title: The Super Mario Galaxy Movie
MPA Rating: PG
Director: Aaron Horvath, Michael Jelenic, Pierre Leduc
Starring: Chris Pratt, Brie Larson, Charlie Day
Runtime: 1 hr 38 mins
What It Is: We’re back in the mushroom kingdom! This time around Mario (Pratt) and Luigi (Day) now have a bit of a reputation. As they traverse through the warp pipes all around they’ll make sure to keep things safe for everyone. With no threat of Bowser (Jack Black), since he’s locked away, they think everything is as it should be. A new villain has risen and he intends to finish what Bowser started.
What We Think: This film is really a case of more of the same. This is dumb, soulless fun. Exactly what I said about the first Super Mario Movie. Still it’s fun to see. Illumination from an animation standpoint are still evolving and getting better, but at the end of the day you can still tell it’s one of their films. Whatever I’m going to say won’t play into the money this is going to make. It’s already the highest grossing film with almost 1 billion, again. The new additions to the tale were a fun add. I won’t mention them due to spoilers but you can all see the beloved dinosaur Yoshi. He’s adorable, but being adorable is kinda his thing.
Our Grade: C-, This is by no means what you’d consider a good movie. Not at all. It’ll entertain who it is meant to entertain. Critically speaking there is nothing I can say or do to stop this juggernaut. Nintendo and Illumination are rolling in it. This should be available to watch (and rewatch) from home by the time this hits the page. Maybe check it out there if you’re not one of the 8 billion people who’ve already seen it. Check it out if it interests you or if you have children. I will warn it is a super hyper film and that might work against certain parents and their sensibilities. Nonetheless it is, if anything, entertaining. Despite Chris Pratt.
