Title: Swapped
MPA Rating: PG
Director: Nathan Greno
Starring: Michael B. Jordan, Juno Temple, Tracy Morgan
Runtime: 1 hr 38 mins
What It Is: In a mystical world full of unique creatures the land is terrorized by a fire wolf. The furry pookoo however have a different set of issues. You see the local nut they use as primary sustenance is being eaten en masse by the flying bird known as javan. Ollie (Jordan), a little pookoo, accidently taught the Javan how to unsheathe and eat the aforementioned nut. When Ollie accidently swaps into a javan he’ll get insight into how they live and why they live the way they do. With a little help from Ivy (Temple), a Javan herself.
What We Think: It’s adorable and endearing. There isn’t much to say about the plot, it’s standard body swapping silliness. Its true message lies in the misconceptions we form around people and creatures we perceive as enemies. It’s a strong message and one that the film does a really nice job putting forth. The voice acting from newly crowned Best Actor winner Michael B. Jordan and the always phenomenal Juno Temple is a highlight. Even if the story is a little light this is perfect children’s fare. Its PG rating makes it super effective for parents to enjoy it with their kids and it’s engaging enough that those adults won’t be bored.
Our Grade: B-, 100% this is a very good kids film. One that tiny eyeballs are sure to enjoy. Its messaging is important but not so overt that it hurts the overall fun world created by this film. If you have children it’s a must put on and if you enjoy an animated adventure it’s fun enough to keep attention. Being on Netflix I’m quite certain it’ll be playing across living rooms all over the country. For those not down with the incredible art of animation don’t see it. For everyone else, it’s at least worth a shot!
