Title: Thrash
MPA Rating: R
Director: Tommy Wirkola
Starring: Whitney Peak, Phoebe Dynevor, Djimon Hounsou
Runtime: 1 hr 26 mins

What It Is: A huge storm is headed to a small town. It’s not just any storm. This is looking to be a full blown category 5 hurricane. This isn’t even the biggest impending threat. You see with those rising waters comes something no one wants to see…sharks. Now a woman trapped in her home and a pregnant woman trapped in her car must try to survive. All the while a shark researcher tries to reach the town to make sure he can keep the casualties to a minimum.

What We Think: It’s a completely competently made shark film. It doesn’t go much further than that. Still, there’s a thrill to seeing nature’s most dangerous predator try to navigate a place they very much should not be. Likewise, you like the characters here enough to want to know whether or not nature wins. Which, I like Mother’s chances given she’s got two shots at it. Whitney Peak is such a standout here even if the film as a whole never really works out well enough to impress me. Visually you can really feel the squeeze here, or perhaps it’s the hurry that one feels. Nonetheless it doesn’t work out as well as it should.

Our Grade: C+, Yeah it’s a great background noise film or if you’re REALLY into shark movies. I, sadly, am not. I respect them, but like there’s never going to be anything that beats 1975’s Jaws for me anyway. It is the peak of the genre. Mixing two elements that humanity can’t control and isn’t ever really prepared for should’ve worked a lot better than this did. Still, it’s a fine little movie. If you have Netflix, be sure to check this one out! It’ll get the job done if you’re looking for something to watch.
