Review: Micronations (2026 Tribeca Film Festival)

Title: Micronations
MPA Rating: Not Rated
Director: Joe Kowalski
Starring: Mike Abu, Gojko Alyloski, Adrianne Baugh
Runtime: 1 hr 37 mins

What It Is: Micronations. They are by definition not really definable. They can be entire towns in the middle of the Nevada desert or a simple rock in a box. In this documentary we get a look into the people and personalities who own and rule over their own micronation. The masters of their own domains. When all of these “world leaders” congregate at a convention even Geneva would be jealous. This documentary explores the what and the who behind this weird and interesting phenomenon.

What We Think: This documentary does a really great job of not making fun of a seemingly odd premise. One conceived by a rather interesting cache of people. I like that Kowalski has put together these strange individuals with some genuinely good filmmaking. I think the sincerity is the biggest thing with a subject matter like this. There are a million ways to pick on and ridicule. It takes a lot more skill to just give us the facts and stay in the middle of it all. For something like this the subject makes the film. And these, well they’re interesting subjects indeed.

Our Grade: C+, It’s a fine piece of documentary filmmaking. Kowalski didn’t have to show his skill too hard but I feel like this was a doc carried by the editing. I say this because the pacing was glorious and the whole thing wraps in only 97 minutes. If you are intrigued by the subject matter this’ll definitely hit. If not, why are you even reading this bro? I’m sure there are other things you could do. Nonetheless a worthwhile project that could’ve been better, but as documentaries often do it could’ve gone a ton worse. Check it out? What are your opinions on micronations?
