Title: Immaculate
MPA Rating: R
Director: Michael Mohan
Starring: Sydney Sweeney, Álvaro Morte, Simona Tabasco
Runtime: 1 hr 29 mins

What It Is: Sister Cecilia (Sweeney) is a new nun on the scene. When she, a virgin, becomes pregnant it is seen as a miracle. An immaculate event. But what is really happening in the Italian church where in which she’s sought refuge? Everything is not what it seems this includes the head of the church the mysterious Father Sal Tedeschi (Morte). Who might not be whom and what he seems. This pregnancy however could be the most deadly thing of it all to Cecilia’s body.

What We Think: Meh. Sydney Sweeney was excellent in Anyone But You which was material that she delivered well enough even if it feels like she’s sleepwalking through every film she is in. Perhaps that’s her vocal cadence which is somewhere between asleep and high as hell. She almost mumbles throughout this. Even in moments when her sadness, anger or confusion takes over. Michael Mohan is doing stuff. Which, great for him. However the stuff he’s doing isn’t by any means good. Andrew Lobel’s script though is where this whole thing falls on it’s face. I am not, by any means, a religious man but even I have to question those moments within this. There is, for example, a scene in which Cecilia attempts to leave the convent. The how of this being done is what is completely stupid.

Our Grade: C+, It doesn’t have the fun of other horror films that have come out this year. It doesn’t have the scares or suspense of better films in the religious horror subgenre. It isn’t even that good of a “nun core” film. A friend of mine pointed out that they’ve yet to be impressed by Sydney Sweeney. I get that. This film won’t change his mind either. He really needs to see Anyone But You which is much much better. That said, skip this. It ain’t great.
