What It Is: Newlywed Ellen Hutter (Depp) is haunted by a specter that has lingered in her life for as long as she can remember. It visits her in dreams, its reach unrelenting. Now, with her husband preparing to leave for an extended work trip, she is gripped by fear. The Count he is set to visit—one Count Orlok (Skarsgård)—may not be what he seems. Unfortunately for everyone close to Ellen, including her husband Thomas (Hoult), they are about to discover just how deeply haunted she truly is.

What We Think: Robert Eggers continues his streak of absolute cinematic mastery. He’s only made four films, yet each one showcases a level of visual superiority that deserves to be studied. The blackness and overall presentation of this film are stunning—shadows menace even when we never see what they belong to. Orlok is a constant plague to everyone on screen, even the unsuspecting.

This might be the most visually striking film of 2024, and it’s certainly one of my favorites. While 132 minutes might seem like a bloated runtime, I honestly could have spent even more time in this world. Luckily, Focus Features sent me a copy of the Extended Cut, and I have to say—I loved it.

Our Grade: A, An excellent piece. Eggers is consistently fantastic—he has to be one of the best of the new age auteurs. A guy who just doesn’t miss. Four films down, and four soon-to-be classics. I hope this run of excellence continues. We’ll see what the future holds for him.

Lily-Rose Depp continues to dodge the “nepo baby” allegations. She’s genuinely award-worthy here. She’s fully committed to her performance, which is crucial for a film like this.

Bill Skarsgård once again goes full maniac, and it was absolutely necessary.

Nicholas Hoult gets back-to-back praise here on the site. Once again, as he did in Juror #2, he’s a highlight. This dude is building quite a resume.
