Title: Captain America: Brave New World
MPA Rating: PG-13
Director: Julius Onah
Starring: Anthony Mackie, Danny Ramirez, Harrison Ford
Runtime: 1 hr 58 mins
What It Is: Sam Wilson (Mackie) is the new Captain America—and with that title comes certain responsibilities. Responsibilities Sam takes very seriously. When he’s called to the White House by the new President, Thaddeus “Thunderbolt” Ross (Ford), he hopes it’s a routine meeting. But when an attempt is made on Ross’s life, those hopes are quickly shattered.
The mystery behind the attack will push our new Captain to his patriotic limits—and the new President to his literal breaking point. Something has to give, and the safety of people across the globe may hang in the balance.
What We Think: This is a serviceable—if unspectacular—new entry in the ever-waning Marvel Cinematic Universe. Julius Onah is similarly competent as a director, though it’s clear someone at Disney thought a former music video director would be the perfect fit for their ongoing mission to keep any director from truly expressing themselves.
Anthony Mackie and the rest of the cast are fine, but the film is ultimately nothing to write home about. It feels more like an extension of the Disney+ show than a standalone cinematic event.
Our Grade: C-, All filler no killer here. This is a definitive going through the motions Marvel film. I consider a different Captain America movie Marvel’s finest moment. This is no Captain America: Winter Soldier. A decade on from that Mackie, though charismatic just doesn’t FEEL like Steve Rogers. I like what Mackie brings to his character and Danny Ramirez as the “new” Falcon works okay. Harrison Ford replacing William Hurt (RIP) as Thunderbolt Ross gives him even more grumpy boomer vibes. Those totally work and lend to his ultimate descent into madness well. I don’t really like this movie all that much. It’s fine and if you’re a Marvel fan my review isn’t going to change your decision to see this or not.
