Title: Ash
MPA Rating: R
Director: Flying Lotus
Starring: Eiza Gonzalez, Aaron Paul, Iko Uwais
Runtime: 1 hr 35 mins
What It Is: Riya (Gonzalez) has woken up from some sort of accident, surrounded only by death and despair. The entire crew she was with has been killed, mauled viciously. Now, she’s determined to figure out what exactly has taken place. What she finds, however, may be something she’s wholly unprepared for. When a crew member suddenly appears, things may not be as they seem, and with no clear understanding of what has happened, Riya knows she can’t put her trust in anyone—at least, not yet.
What We Think: This is absolutely my kind of film. Not only is Flying Lotus completely off the handle visually, but he also understands where to put the camera, when to cut, and how to get the most out of his cast. The real star of the show, though, is cinematographer Richard Bluck—every scene is a tableau of terror, soaked in harsh reds and cool purplish-blues. Eiza Gonzalez continues to prove she’s a total star; every time she’s in something, she brings her A-game. She’s always great. Aaron Paul is also excellent here, in a role we’ve never really seen him tackle before. Iko Uwais brings the action, and Flying Lotus even puts himself in the film.
Our Grade: B+, Shudder has a true winner on it’s hands here. Because it’s on Shudder you should definitely check it out. If you don’t have Shudder what are you doing? Especially for excellent genre cinema like this it is THE premier streaming service. Frankly I am not a horror movie person. I leave that to my co-host chai. What I can say about this though is that it is the type of horror film I like. It’s gorgeous and ugly all at the same time. I think any fan of this sort of thing will love it.
