Title: O’Dessa
MPA Rating: PG-13
Director: Geremy Jasper
Starring: Sadie Sink, Kelvin Harrison Jr., Murray Bartlett
Runtime: 1 hr 46 mins
What It Is: In some dangerous alternate universe, there exists a city entirely controlled by a man named Plutonovich (Bartlett). He uses television and its visuals as tools of control, and most of the population is fully bought in. O’Dessa (Sink), a farmer’s daughter, is blessed with a gift from her father—she’s a phenomenal busker, just like he was. Now, she’s in the city, trying to reclaim what she lost and discover what she didn’t know she needed.
What We Think: Stylistically, this film has it. It’s a gorgeous movie with a uniquely neon-coated aesthetic. Sadie Sink is incredibly charismatic as the titular busker, and honestly, it was refreshing to see her in such a weird and interesting role. Murray Bartlett chews the scenery in a performance I can only describe as… there. He’s absolutely unhinged. Kelvin Harrison Jr., as the bombastic and flamboyant Euri Dervish, spins just as his surname implies. The film’s story is a total mess, but that’s not why you come here. You come to marvel at the world Geremy Jasper creates.
Our Grade: C, Yeah, this film is okay. Its lack of focus and overall disaster of a script stunt its potential, but the visuals are enough to make anyone curious about whatever is happening here. Stylistically, it reminds me of the excellent Turbo Kid—post-apocalyptic and colorful. The characters feel unique to their world, so it all comes together nicely as a package. If not for that, this would be completely devoid of interest to anyone. As it stands, I’d recommend it if you want something fun to look at—even on mute. Hopefully, Sadie Sink will get more scripts that actually let her show off her acting chops, because this one just doesn’t. This one is available on Disney+
