What It Is: The latest entry in the long-running horror series takes us back to the 1960s. The world’s most luxurious nightclub in the sky has just opened its doors. But when disaster strikes, a young woman manages to save a little boy from death—an act that sets off a butterfly effect of events that would ultimately define what this franchise is all about. The question remains: how does one stop the endless cycle of death’s design?
What We Think: Yeah, I’m a fan of this series—and of what it does best. There’s something refreshing about how unabashedly silly it gets at times. Of course, the franchise’s trademark is its outlandishly over-the-top, almost Rube Goldberg–esque kills. Each death plays out like a twisted chain reaction, a series of unfortunate events spiraling into inevitability.
This installment also delivers a ton of lore and exposition, which I think the series badly needed. I loved diving deeper into the mechanics of how death “gets its point across” here. Honestly, that ambitious pile of exposition elevates this film above many of the earlier entries.
Our Grade: B+, A welcome slice of horror film making in a franchise I’ve always found merit in. What this film achieves, and where it takes the series, makes it a standout for the genre in 2025. In terms of modern mainstream horror franchises, this might be my favorite. I’d highly recommend checking it out—it’s a true treat for anyone who enjoys some bloody, disgusting fun in their kills. Beyond that, it’s simply a fun, clever piece of horror that works no matter your cinematic prejudices.
