Title: Worth the Wait
MPA Rating: Not Rated
Director: Tom Lin
Starring: Lana Condor, Andrew Koji, Elodie Yung
Runtime: 1 hr 42 mins
What It Is: Scott (Koji) works for his father in Malaysia. Leah (Condor) is a nurse in the States. When the two meet in the unlikeliest of places, a spark turns into something more. Meanwhile, movie star Amanda (Yung) finds herself working with a familiar director on a film that brings her new insight and perspective on love and life. Together, these stories weave into a web of romance that audiences won’t soon forget.
What We Think: Color me surprised—this is a solid romantic comedy coming directly from Tubi. The fact that it’s an original on a service with no paid model only highlights how much rising subscription costs elsewhere stem from nothing short of corporate greed.
Lana Condor is as charming as ever here. I love the work she’s doing in the rom-com genre—just look at To All the Boys… for prime examples. She and Andrew Koji share wonderful chemistry that really carries the film.
Overall, Tom Lin’s direction is serviceable. There’s not much he can do with this script: no flashy crane shots, nothing especially artistic from a directorial standpoint. To be fair, though, you don’t always need to be flashy behind the lens to get the job done.
Our Grade: C-, A perfectly fine little rom-com. No reinvention of the wheel, no real ambition beyond making us fall in love with the characters and enjoy their situations—and in that regard, the film succeeds. I genuinely believe audiences will find exactly what they’re looking for here. And finding the film couldn’t be easier.
(Side note: this also happens to be the first review I’ve ever finished while up in the clouds.)
