Title: Greek Mothers Never Die
MPA Rating: Not Rated
Director: Rachel Suissa
Starring: Abby Miner, Rachel Suissa, Simon Rérolle
Runtime: 2 hrs 5 mins

What It Is: Ella (Miner) isn’t getting any younger, and her overbearing mother isn’t making things any easier with constant talk of settling down and wanting grandchildren. It’s the sort of pressure a young Greek woman can—and should—expect from her very Greek mother. When the boy Ella loved as a child reenters her life, there’s no time like the present to rekindle those old flames—even if her mother has to step in to make it happen. A difficult task, given the circumstances.

What We Think: There’s a real heart at the center of this film, and it’s beating loudly through Rachel Suissa, who clearly poured a lot of herself into it. Literally—since she plays Ella’s mom, Despina—and narratively, because it’s clear she’s drawing from personal experience. Abby Miner seems to be having a ball, even if her acting doesn’t always feel entirely authentic.

Suissa, on the other hand, goes big on screen, and it totally works for me. She comes across as overbearing and a pain in the ass—which is exactly the point. I wasn’t as taken with Simon Rérolle, though; his performance didn’t click for me, and it hurt his overall likability.

Our Grade: C+, A very lovable little indie that absolutely deserves some attention. If you like—or, in my case, love—romantic comedies, this is a sweet one that wears its heart on its sleeve in all the best ways. It’s worth a watch, and it’s easy to find for free on Tubi.

That said, it does run a bit too long, and you can feel it—the length drags down the overall experience. At times the comedy wears thin and the plot loses momentum. I think trimming a solid 15 to 20 minutes would have benefited it exponentially.
