Title: Hung Up On A Dream: The Zombies Documentary
MPA Rating: Not Rated
Director: Robert Schawartzman
Starring: The Zombies
Runtime: 1 hr 56 mins

What It Is: A documentary that focuses on the ‘60s band The Zombies—the influences that shaped them, and the bands that followed in their wake. It explores how a British Invasion group transcended even that label to become your dad’s favorite band’s favorite band. Spanning 60 years, it traces their journey from an unknown British act to Rock & Roll Hall of Famers, complete with all the ups and downs you’d expect from such a long road and such iconic music.

What We Think: If you want something—like a music documentary—done right, hire a musician! Robert Schwartzman made his name with the band Rooney, and it’s clear they were inspired by what The Zombies were doing four decades earlier. This film plays as a love letter to what makes—and made—the band the iconic force their music became.

I found it fascinating to discuss this with director Robert Schwartzman (see interview below) and hear about his passion for telling stories centered on real bands and musicians. His distribution company, Utopia, is at the forefront of these kinds of releases—and they’re always really well made.

Our Grade: B, The Zombies were, before this, a band I’d heard but never realized certain songs belonged to them. “She’s Not There,” for example—I had no idea. It’s one of those things you don’t really piece together until you’re older.

What I can’t stress enough, though, is just how incredible this band’s music is. You can hear the roots of modern indie and garage rock in the full breadth of their songs. Robert Schwartzman continues to impress me as a director—he understands his vision and has the talent to fully bring it to life.
