Title: Freakier Friday
MPA Rating: PG
Director: Nisha Ganatra
Starring: Jamie Lee Curtis, Lindsay Lohan, Julia Butters
Runtime:1 hr 50 mins

What It Is: Anna (Lohan) is now a mother to a teenage girl, Harper. Harper is a bit of a handful — she enjoys surfing and not much else. When Anna meets the handsome single dad Eric (Manny Jacinto), the two fall head over heels for one another. The issue? Eric’s daughter Lily (Sophia Hammons) and Harper don’t exactly get along. Because of this — and a little bit of magic — Anna and her mother Tess (Curtis) have swapped again, this time into Harper and Lily, while the teenagers find themselves in Anna and Tess’s bodies.

What We Think: Yeah. I’m not really the guy who enjoyed the first film all that much, and I’m certainly not the guy for this one. I was a big fan of Nisha Ganatra’s two previous films, The High Note and Late Night. Both had a certain quality and fun I enjoyed — their scripts were good and great, respectively. This isn’t particularly great nor good. In actuality, it’s pretty bad. Lindsay Lohan was never much in the way of an actress; bad material doesn’t help her, and great material elevates her (see Mean Girls). I don’t know about people who are the target audience (millennials who loved the first one, and mothers and daughters — groups I’m not a part of), but for the average viewer, this is a stinker. Dead on arrival, sadly.

Our Grade: D, It lacks any real substance outside of being a money feeder for the worst of Disney’s instincts: “Let’s make a lot of money fast. Let’s not think too hard about it. Let’s not make the audience think too hard about it.” The result? A film that the talent involved, both in front of and behind the camera, deserves better than. For me, this just didn’t work on almost any level of what one would call a good film. I can’t recommend it to an ordinary audience — it’s just sort of… a thing for certain segments of viewers. Don’t see this. I beg you not to give Disney any more of your damn money. They’re the toxic ex you all keep going back to.
