Title: Oh, Hi!
MPA Rating: R
Director: Sophie Brooks
Starring: Molly Gordon, Logan Lerman, Geraldine Viswanathan
Runtime: 1 hr 35 mins

What It Is: Iris (Gordon) and Isaac (Lerman) are having a little weekend getaway — their first one since they started seeing each other. It’s a beautiful, scenic cabin, the type of place where nothing could seemingly ever go wrong. When Isaac has some news that Iris doesn’t take too well, she’s going to need the help of her best friend Max (Viswanathan) and her boyfriend Kenny (John Reynolds) to figure out what to do now that the shit has officially hit the fan.

What We Think: Sophie Brooks’ previous film (the wonderfully underrated The Boy Downstairs) was such a surprise when it dropped. Now, almost a decade later, it seems the bite and sarcasm aren’t as powerful as they used to be. There are a lot of problems with the direction the film takes with its narrative. For what it’s worth, Molly Gordon is absolutely awesome in this. I haven’t seen her this good since Theater Camp. This is such a different role for her. Unfortunately, I really thought that the twist — which comes early in the film — was sort of silly. It didn’t land with enough impact for me to care, and that made the subsequent actions not as meaningful as maybe they should’ve been.

Our Grade: B+, There’s quite a lot to like despite my obvious issues with the script’s structure. It’s very funny, and Molly Gordon and Geraldine Viswanathan have excellent chemistry — the kind that can carry a film in spite of its obstacles. Logan Lerman is rather charming in a way that makes what happens in the film feel like he’s quite the victim — but not enough for me to say he didn’t deserve it. I would recommend the film. It’s a funny comedy that goes a little off the rails, and that might intrigue some audiences.
