Title: Together
MPA Rating: R
Director: Michael Shanks
Starring: Dave Franco, Alison Brie, Damon Herriman
Runtime: 1 hr 42 mins
What It Is: Tim (Franco) and Millie (Brie) have just moved out of the city and into a small town deep in the woods. When they venture into those woods on a hike, they get lost as the rain begins to fall. This leads to them tumbling into a hole — and that’s when the strange behavior begins. As doubts about their relationship and whether it’s a one-sided affair start to rear their ugly heads, it’ll be an unseen force that ultimately brings them together.
What We Think: I’m a body horror guy. I’m normally not huge on horror in general, but if you’re going to make a horror film — give me weird, gross body horror. Please. This film is both gross enough to satisfy that crowd and does an amazing job examining relationships. Its focus on codependency between two people is especially interesting. I like that it isn’t afraid to explore that thematically or visually.
Franco and Brie being a married couple probably helped substantially with chemistry, because they play off one another well while also making you believe they’re a real couple. Michael Shanks is doing some really fun things in the director’s chair, and that makes the whole thing coalesce nicely.
Our Grade: A, In a year for horror that’s been mostly good, this is an exceptional standout. I had really low expectations going in — I didn’t think it’d be for me. Turns out it’s very much for me. I’m giving this a huge recommendation. I loved it. It’s gross, fun, and does exactly what you want a film like this to do. It’s also much deeper than you’d expect. Overall, I think it’s absolutely worth your time. So do check it out!
