Title: The Cramps: A Period Piece
MPA Rating: 18+
Director: Brooke H. Cellars
Starring: Lauren Kitchen, Wicken Taylor, Martini Bear
Runtime: 1 hr 29 mins
What It Is: Agnes Applewhite (Kitchen) is a young woman… going through something. For quite some time, there’s been something happening within her. The timing couldn’t be worse — Agnes just started a new position working at the salon of her dreams. Against her mother’s wishes (who doesn’t know she took the job), Agnes works there while hiding that fact. She’s also keeping a really interesting secret from her family and friends — one she can’t control, though it may not be as big a surprise as she thinks it is.
What We Think: This isn’t really my cup of tea. I’m not a John Waters guy — that kind of kitsch has just never really hit for me. That said, I actually had a good time with this. It’s clear that Brooke H. Cellars brings a sincerity to the film that Waters might sometimes substitute with sass, while still maintaining her own distinctive storytelling voice.
Lauren Kitchen is immensely likable, and by the film’s end, you love Agnes and want nothing but the world for her. Martini Bear is a force and steals every single scene he’s in.
Our Grade: C+, This is a really enjoyable experience for fans of this kind of thing. My grade solely reflects my personal bias and how the film hit me. This film had the luxury of being seen by some of my dearest friends — and they loved it. So, for those in the know, definitely check it out. Also, take a gander at our interview with Brooke — it’s a pretty fun watch, if I do say so myself.
If it’s playing at a festival near you, see it if you’re into this kind of film, because honestly, I have no idea when it’s actually coming out.
