Title: Sisu: Road to Revenge
MPA Rating: R
Director: Jalmari Helander
Starring: Jorma Tommila, Stephen Lang, Richard Brake
Runtime: 1 hr 29 mins
What It Is: When the Red Army took over his homeland, a silent man did what needed to be done. Those actions were chronicled in the first Sisu. Now he heads back into enemy territory to retrieve his home and rebuild it log by log. When Commander Dragunov (Lang) is tasked with hunting him down, he will stop at nothing to accomplish his goal. Our hero will not stop either, not until the home he once shared with his murdered family is safe, someplace the Red Army cannot reach.
What We Think: If you have seen the first film in this series, then you know precisely what you are getting into with this one. Heavy on action and ridiculousness, and light on protagonist dialogue. Jorma Tommila’s face is so weathered, carrying a worn quality that works surprisingly well for the audience. It adds to the authenticity and grit of the experience. This is such a fun film, especially when enjoyed with a packed theater. The audible gasps and laughter made this one a blast to experience communally. Stephen Lang is clearly having a ball here. Every time he is on screen, he is reveling in playing an absolute scumbag.
Our Grade: B+, If you have seen the first film, you already know what you are getting into and whether this is for you. These films are wildly underrated. You do not need to overthink them. You just sit back and enjoy the madness as it unfolds. This one is still playing in theaters, and while you could watch it at home, seeing it with an audience is absolutely worth it. See this one immediately.
