Title: All of You
MPA Rating: R
Director: William Bridges
Starring: Brett Goldstein, Imogen Poots, Jenna Coleman
Runtime: 1 hr 38 mins
What It Is: Simon (Goldstein) has been lifelong best friends with Laura (Poots). In this near-future world, similar to our own, people looking for love can take a test that matches them with a partner, often leading directly to marriage. When Laura receives her result and meets Lukas (Steven Cree), everything changes. These lifelong friends, who might have been the perfect match for one another, may never get a chance at romance. Laura and Lukas are now married with children, while Simon is still trying to figure things out.
What We Think: One of the most important elements of any romantic film is that the leads are likable. Unfortunately, Laura really is not. That is not to say Imogen Poots is not good, because she is, but Laura as a character is so unlikable that it becomes difficult to root for her happiness. Simon is not always the easiest person to be around either, but to a much lesser degree. William Bridges is a solid director, and from a cinematography standpoint the film is quite beautiful.
Our Grade: C, To say this disappointed me would be an understatement. I went into this expecting a sleeper hit. Instead, I got a romantic film filled with characters I did not want happiness for. This is not on the actors, who are simply working with what is on the page. That said, Goldstein wrote the script and gave himself a far more compelling character than anyone else. This story is apparently based on an episode of a show Goldstein appeared in, and sometimes ideas just do not translate well to a longer format. Much like some short films, not everything needs to become a feature. That feels very much like the case here. Still, if you are curious, it is available on Apple TV+.
