What It Is: Whitney (James) is phenomenally talented when it comes to marketing, both herself and whatever she is trying to sell. Not bad for an international studies major. When she impresses Sean (Ben Schnetzer), he hires her on the spot to work for his company, Cardify. While brainstorming ways to improve their dating app MatchBox, they stumble upon an idea that will change online dating forever. It also ends up changing the lives of everyone involved, for better or worse.

What We Think: Lily James is on an absolute roll. Between her subtle performance in Iron Claw, her fantastic turn in Relay, and now this film, she is bringing a specific hint of mischief to everything she does. When the film needs to get serious, James is up to the task. Jackson White plays an absolute piece of garbage and he is excellent in the role. For a film that premiered on Hulu, there is a lot to like here.

Rachel Lee Goldenberg is still a relatively young director (she is only 41), but her last three features have absolutely hit. I enjoyed her remake of Valley Girl, Unpregnant was phenomenal, and this film offers an interesting look at tech culture and the misogyny within it. The fact that it is somewhat based on actual events makes the serious moments land even harder.

Our Grade: B-, With a confident and competent director behind the lens, the film has an unapologetic energy. Much like Whitney herself, everything feels self-assured and destined to succeed. Thankfully it does, and we as the audience are treated to something that really worked for me. This is a surprisingly fun film that offers a pointed discussion about the importance of women’s rights, especially in the workplace. It also shows that sometimes a little girl power can go a long way.
