Title: Bedford Park
MPA Rating: Not Rated
Director: Stephanie Ahn
Starring: Moon Choi, Simon Kim, Joohong Jung
Runtime: 1 hr 57 mins

What It Is: Sometimes two souls meet, and the chemistry and timing are undeniable. When a young woman struggling with a bevy of family and personal issues meets the man who ruined her mother’s car, she gets more than she bargained for. You see, this angry man is also a rather complicated one. With nothing else to do, she agrees to chauffeur him to work since his car doesn’t really work anymore. But things, as they so often do, begin to evolve between the two.

What We Think: Sony Pictures Classics has decided to pick this one up, and they will inevitably fumble its release. This is a beautiful and romantic film. It is a triumph for a first-time director. Stephanie Ahn, I want to see what else you’ve got. I want your next feature now. She understands her characters, and that is so important for such an intimate story. This is a film fully focused on family, expectations, and self-worth. What these characters are dealing with, on the whole, makes them so interesting. You all know I love a film about love, and this one explores all kinds of it.

Our Grade: B+, There is something to be said for just making something good and letting it be. That is the strength of this film. Stephanie Ahn understands where her bread is buttered and continues to let it rip. I would highly recommend this gorgeous piece. Not only is it the right amount of romantic, but it does so in a way that pulls on the heartstrings just right. I honestly enjoyed this one and cannot wait for audiences to fall in love with these beautifully flawed people. As I often say about new directors who truly impress me, I very much look forward to seeing what she does next.
