Title: Extra Geography
MPA Rating: Not Yet Rated
Director: Molly Manners
Starring: Marni Duggan, Galaxie Clear, Alice Englert
Runtime: 1 hr 34 mins

What It Is: Flic (Duggan) and Minna (Clear) are two high schoolers who, like most girls their age, are curious about a lot of things: friendship, boys, studies, growing up, and their summer project, “to fall in love”. When they pinpoint their geography teacher as the target of their affections, it is certainly about to get real weird. However, when various elements begin to come into their lives, boys, it complicates the project and their friendship. Can they remain friends through it all?

What We Think: This film relies on its young leads and a first-time feature director. Both of those elements absolutely nail it. Duggan and Clear (whose name is amazing) are pitch perfect as best friends kinda going through it. Manners is very straightforward as a director here, but bits of flash and style shine through in some moments. I said it on X and I’ll say it again, this will inevitably get compared to the fantastic Booksmart. Those comps are understandable given that both films center on high school girls going through it. This film’s more British sensibilities are a true separator between the two.

Our Grade: B-, There can be no doubt that Molly Manners’ debut is such an intriguing and funny film. Its exploration of its subject matter leads the audience on a wild journey of teenage exploration, both physically and emotionally. I highly recommend it. It has the main thing a comedy needs: laughs. When something is funny, everything else can fall by the wayside for the most part. That those other parts are also pretty well done gives you a well-rounded film. Check this one out whenever it decides to get released. It’s a smart, fun film that’s worth your time. A nice little surprise from Sundance this year.
