Title: KIssing is the Easy Part
MPA Rating: Not Rated
Director: Fawzia Mirza
Starring: Paris Berelc, Asher Angel, Jennifer Roberston
Runtime: 1 hr 40 mins
What It Is: Flora (Berelc) is the most popular girl at her school. All the girls wanna be her and the boys wanna be with her. Sean (Angel) is a science nerd who, over the summer, had a bit of a glow up. Flora’s parents are, likewise, scientists and they really want Flora to take the SAT because they know she’ll do well, but Flora doesn’t care about this and instead tends to ape the attitudes and hobbies of whomever she’s dating. Sean idolizes Flora’s parents and they use that to hatch a plan. When Flora’s influencer boyfriend cheats on her she leaves him. With that opening her parents want to pay Sean to date Flora and perhaps she will take her education seriously.
What We Think: Cliche-riddled romcoms are sort of a thing we’ve become accustomed to. Tubi is going to take the shortcut narratively every time with their originals. Berelc and Angel have really good chemistry and that sort of drives the plot even if you think you know where everything is going. With a film like this it’s just really hard to go too bad for it when everything felt so…cheap. Fawzia Mirza is capable of so much better. She’s done so much better.
Our Grade: D+, Dude. I don’t know, there just seems something rotten with this that didn’t work nearly as well as it should’ve. Everything sort of feels blasé and predictable. There are a lot of things this film could’ve done with its script and every step of the way it picked the easy route. I would totally recommend a skip on this one. It’s just not really worth the 100 minutes it occupies. Its director deserves so much better.
