What It Is: Grace Pine is a music critic. She’s written in major publications like SPIN Magazine. When she gets an idea to write a book on Jagged Little Pill by Alanis Morissette she moves to Montreal to make it happen. When she meets Archie (Bostick), the guitarist of a small indie band, Grace likes what she’s hearing from the fresh-faced French-Canadian quartet Bone Patrol. But it’s the weirdo, slightly charismatic lead singer Chevy (Stanley Simons) who really catches her attention. With a list of goals for her summer in Quebec, the stage is set.

What We Think: I absolutely adored this one. Chandler Lavack also directed Roommates and it’s clear that this one, also written by her, meant more. It’s semi-autobiographical, speaking to the experiences of Lavack herself when she was a blooming music critic in the early 2010s. She also does an immaculate job of capturing that time period, one that I know and understand all too well. Barbie Ferreira is giving it her all here and she brings to Grace exactly what her name implies. There’s a grace to her. Even when she’s being the worst friend/roommate/person there’s a spark of her enthusiasm for life. The passion of what music means to her. The feelings it wrought within her. Where this film shines is the structure. It’s all framed beautifully and the story is easy to follow. I kept thinking as I was watching this how much this movie was my shit. The music and the setting all fit a need and a want that I have.

Our Grade: A-, I am a fan of a terrific little surprise. This was exactly that. I need more great films that not many have heard of and end up being great. I really loved what Chandler Lavack brought here. The personal touches and the smart script lent itself well. This is definitely a film to check out whenever you can! I loved it!
