What It Is: World War II is in full swing and the Americans have a bold plan of attack. Something they’ve thought up called “D-Day.” This invasion would be the largest seaborne one of its kind in the history of man. With such an endeavor one thing needs to be for certain…the conditions. To help with that, American general Dwight “Ike” Eisenhower (Fraser) has brought in meteorologist James Stagg (Scott) to help predict the weather patterns and select a date to best proceed with this large scale attack.
What We Think: Sometimes the world just needs a good old fashioned World War II movie. That’s exactly what this is. Brendan Fraser is superb as General Eisenhower and truly brings gravitas to a role that requires much of it. Andrew Scott is his typical fantastic. Anthony Maras makes the whole thing feel light as a cloud and is doing excellent work from the chair. This is normally something you’d see toward the 4th quarter of the year when awards season is in swing. Is it the best thing out this year? No, but given the climate of its release it’s certainly a refreshing bit of history for the box office.
Our Grade: B-, It doesn’t reinvent the wheel in any way but a war movie pre-summer just sort of works. This is a really great film that’ll definitely make everyone’s dad really happy. So do just that. Rent it. Watch it with your father while you have them. Even if you’re really not into war movies. I really do recommend this one and I know our audience here will find something to enjoy within this. Saddle up, it’s time for D-Day live in your living rooms…again. The pressure is on, barometric and otherwise.
