What It Is: Kara Zor-El (Alcock), that’s Supergirl to us living under Earth’s yellow sun. When Krem (Schoenaerts) harms her dog Krypto she ends up wrapped up in an interstellar adventure that’ll see her search the galaxies for Krem in order to find the antidote for her puppy’s pain. She will deal with whomever and whatever she has to in order to get this done. Along the way she might accidentally help out young Ruthye (Ridley) in her plight.
What We Think: What a gigantic waste of time and resources this film is. Alcock is a swaggering, stumbling mess as Kara. It works until it really doesn’t. This script is terrible and Gillespie is an absolute mess behind the lens. Everything is a blurry mess when the action starts. After what we got from Superman last year this is a big disappointment. All the things that made that a marvel to watch and a really fun time are gone. In their place are attempts to be cool, decent needle drops and an overall party atmosphere that never really works for what we’re dealing with. I think Kara’s laissez-faire attitude works better in spurts.
Our Grade: D+, At no point during this film did I feel like I wanted to recommend this. I went in wanting to love it. I left mostly despising it. No one here is doing anything well enough to earn respect from me. If you really liked last year’s entry in the superhero canon from DC I’m sorry to tell you, this isn’t nearly as good. Let’s just let James Gunn direct these things and stop relying on cheap imitators. It is not really working and is hurting the product.
