Review: Little Brother

Title:  Little Brother
MPA Rating: R
Director: Matt Spicer
Starring: John Cena, Eric Andre, Michelle Monaghan
Runtime: 1 hr 42 mins

What It Is: Marcus (Andre) was a lonely young man when one day he was joined by Rudd Landy (Cena) as a part of the Big Brothers and Big Sisters program. When Marcus reaches out to Rudd as an adult, Rudd’s assistant Mia (Sherry Cola) begins a conversation with Marcus that makes him believe that Rudd has not forgotten him. The only problem is Rudd absolutely forgot him. So when Marcus shows up at his doorstep there’s a ton of confusion about Marcus’ appearance because Mia never told Rudd it was happening.

What We Think: It’s trying really hard to be funny, which for me is a death knell for any comedy. Cena is good enough but it’s Andre that, as he often does, steals the show. Anytime Sherry Cola is on my screen I’m sat because she’s hilarious. Spicer isn’t anything special as a director but a comedy like this isn’t really a requirement. This got a couple of chuckles out of me, in spite of not really being my humor. That’s a testament to Andre and Cena. I can’t give the script the credit because that thing is an abomination.

Our Grade: D+, Not a glaring failure but also really not good. This is another Happy Madison style clone from the company that continues to make Happy Madison comedies, the bad ones led by Adam Sandler. I feel bad for Michelle Monaghan being stuck in a project like this. She deserves better. Either way at no point would I give my stamp of approval on this film. I am not going to recommend this to anyone. It’s not really very funny, it doesn’t do anything worthwhile and is an easy skip. No thanks.
