Review: Idiots

Title: Idiots
MPA Rating: R
Director: Macon Blair
Starring: Dave Franco, O’Shea Jackson Jr., Mason Thames
Runtime: 1 hr 40 mins

What It Is: Mark (Franco) is an out of work loser. So too now is Davis (Jackson Jr.), well sort of. He used to drive a van for a church, but a clerical mix-up has led to his dismissal. Now he has no car, Mark having no job, the two of them combine for a job. They must escort rich young delinquent Sheridan (Thames) to a rehabilitation program as a part of a court agreement. Here’s the thing though, anything that could and can go wrong for them does and will.

What We Think: This is a comedy that is genuinely funny. Jackson Jr. and Franco when they are together work so well together as equal allies and at times adversaries. Mason Thames is an unrelenting piece of trash human here. Which is exactly what he should be. There were a ton of times here I genuinely laughed and I am a hard nut to crack when it comes to all that. One scene in particular is so outstandingly ridiculous that it’s stuck in my head for a while now, even though I saw the film some time ago. Macon Blair is just the man to wrangle all the chaos of this film. His previous two directorial efforts were very much a wrangling of chaos. He’s good at it.

Our Grade: B+, It’s nice to see a comedy that’s funny and only 100 minutes long. I think I would’ve liked a few more laughable moments and maybe it doesn’t take as long to get truly going. I also think the previous title of this film was better. I understand why they changed it, but don’t like it. This is a recommend for sure. It’s funny and I really enjoyed myself throughout it.
