Title: Black Bag
MPA Rating: R
Director: Stephen Soderbergh
Starring: Michael Fassbender, Cate Blanchett, Marisa Abela
Runtime: 1 hr 33 mins

What It Is: Kathryn (Blanchett) and George (Michael) are intelligence agents working for a highly classified government agency. They’re also a ridiculously happy married couple.

But when Kathryn comes under suspicion for betraying the United States, their relationship faces its biggest test yet.

As George struggles to uncover the truth, he’s forced to confront the possibility that his wife may have committed treason. Everyone around him believes she’s guilty—and even George is starting to have his doubts.

What We Think: Soderbergh is known for his taut, tight direction and magnetic editing style—and both are on full display here.

He’s backed by a splendid cast operating at peak power, and a script that never lets up. All of this coalesces into something that, honestly, I’m not surprised to say is simply spectacular.

The film had me in the palm of its hand the entire time. That kind of complete engagement is rare, but it happened here in full.

This is one of my favorite films of 2025 so far. And alongside the pretty-okay Presence, it’s clear: Soderbergh is back.

I, for one, can’t wait to see what he does next. The dude is simply rolling.

I can assure you—you’re in for a well-written, excellently told film.

I’ll admit, I’m a bit of a sucker for a good spy thriller, so maybe I’m a little biased. But even so, I need everyone to give this one a shot. It was genuinely surprising and really, really good.

A strong recommendation from me—and you know I’d never steer you wrong. Smartly written and even better acted.
